Webinar on Vocabulary Learning: 'Keyword Method: A New Way to Learn English Words' By Vahid Nimehchisalem, PhD

Abstract

As a subcategory of memory strategies (Oxford, 1990), keyword method helps language learners in the acquisition of new words, especially when immediate recall is required (Ellis & Beaton, 1993). Based on Nimehchisalem’s (2010) extension of the Keyword Method, this webinar presents several ways in which learners can expedite and facilitate recalling the newly learned vocabulary items. Techniques like extraction (drawing out meanings of difficult words from some of their constituent letters), inversion (inverting some letters of a difficult word for its meaning), morph-recognition (recognizing roots, prefixes, or suffixes in a word to realize its meaning), sound association (assuming rough equivalents to words with particular sounds), semantic association (inventing stories or visualizations for new words or their constituent parts), and codification (codifying confusable words to avoid errors) will be discussed and practiced. Such techniques have proved to accelerate learners' vocabulary learning rate, particularly those in need of learning many words in a short period. The target audience of this webinar includes English Language Learning-Teaching practitioners and researchers as well as advanced language learners.
